Spiritual Therapy
In Need Of A Spiritual Tune-Up?
Are you high-performing and successful, yet feeling like something is missing?
Do you worry that you’ve lost a connection to your most authentic self?
Are you ready to go deeper in an effort to fundamentally improve your quality of life and relationships?
When we’re out of touch with that element that makes us uniquely us—call it our soul, spirit, or higher power—a sense of yearning can take over, causing us to feel lost and aimless. Without that deeper connection, our physical, mental, and emotional well-being will likely be affected.
What Is Your Experience?
Maybe you’ve noticed new pains, fears, and anxieties. Your distress persists, despite seeking treatment with a medical provider or a traditional mental health counselor. Though you may not identify as being “anxious” or “depressed,” there is nevertheless a nagging feeling that your life lacks fulfillment. You’re searching for deeper meaning and purpose but don’t know where to find it.
Furthermore, if your relationship with yourself is suffering, chances are your relationships with others are suffering, too. You may find that you’re caught in detrimental patterns, keeping you stuck in cycles of tension, conflict, and disconnection. Wanting to show up authentically and in a loving way with those around you, you may be wondering what to do to realign yourself with your deepest values and most life-affirming connections.
Therapy offers not only emotional and psychological stability, but also a chance to cultivate the spiritual aspects of your being. Working together in the counseling space, we can facilitate a meaningful connection to your inner wisdom and intuition so that you can be fully yourself and present in your life.
Society Has Lost Sight Of The Value Of Spiritual Perspectives
Spiritual development is an essential aspect of personal growth. Since mankind’s earliest rituals, we’ve sought healing through faith. As humans, our impulse is not only to survive, but thrive with a strong sense of purpose, meaning, and affirmation. Yet, we often put limits on what we think we’re capable of.
Unfortunately, modern life has taken us away from a strong connection to our spirituality and the idea of something bigger than ourselves. We have adopted the notion that success lies in the material aspects of life and are left wondering, if I have all this, why don’t I feel satisfied? Not to mention, society has seemed to move away from the concept of a higher power over time.
Even for those of us who ascribe to religious perspectives, spirituality is different from religion. Spirituality is concerned with the internal soul, while religion tends to focus more on an external deity. And in some cases, there are negative religious experiences that have colored our understanding of spirituality in general.
Dr. Herbert Benson—credited for being among the first physicians to incorporate spirituality into American medical practice—found through extensive research that connecting with a higher power can make a significant difference in mental and physical health outcomes. Well-being requires listening to the soul and not just the mind.
Fortunately, therapy can be the catalyst for new spiritual awakenings.
Therapy Can Help Align Your Mental, Physical, Emotional, And Spiritual Well-Being
Many of us grapple with questions like Who am I beyond this role or identity?, What would make me truly happy?, How can I lead a more meaningful existence?, Is there more to life than the mundane?, and Is there something greater out there? Sometimes, all we need is a space to wonder, explore, feel lost, feel our yearning, and be asked the right questions that put us on the path to finding our own answers. Spiritual and transpersonal therapy can help us achieve just that.
A spiritual approach to therapy does not mean getting rid of traditional talk therapy methods. Rather, this type of counseling integrates spiritual perspectives with conventional, holistic mental health approaches to healing that honor the mind-body-spirit connection.
What To Expect
My role as a therapist is to help get your “thinking” brain out of the way so that you can foster deeper, more meaningful emotional and spiritual exploration. Whether you’re looking to approach therapy with specific religious perspectives, or you simply want to pursue an individual, existential experience, I am here to tailor the therapeutic process to your unique intentions.
Once I have an idea of what you’re looking to get out of therapy, I will offer you strategies for quieting the mind and tapping into the “observing self” to allow you to become more present and aware. Through this, you will have an opportunity to access your deepest, most inner wisdom and intuition so that you can illuminate your soul’s purpose and your life’s meaning.
The Approaches I Use
A central aspect of spiritual therapy is mindfulness because it promotes relaxation and decreases cortisol, ultimately reducing stress overall. With heightened awareness and intuition, you will be able to resolve the barriers that have interfered with that deeper sense of connection that’s been missing.
I also incorporate elements of transpersonal psychology (sometimes known as spiritual psychology) into counseling. This branch of therapy acknowledges how identity extends beyond the self and into greater aspects of humanity and spirituality. Such an understanding of human experience is essential to past life regression therapy, which I have studied through The Weiss Institute and can be incorporated into counseling sessions when appropriate.
By opening your mind and accessing your innermost spiritual foundations, you can be freed fully to see and be seen in every aspect of your life. You have the capacity to offer your unique gifts to the world around you—and spiritual therapy can help you reach that potential.
Still Unsure If Spiritual Counseling Is Right For You?
I don’t want you to impose specific beliefs or ideologies on me.
I understand that negative religious experiences in the past have led to pain and skepticism for many of us. My intention is never to force my beliefs on you but rather to guide you in discovering your inner wisdom so that you can reconnect with your most authentic desires, goals, and identity. You already contain the wisdom within—my job is to help you access it.
I identify as religious but have not been getting very much spiritual guidance through religious rituals—can therapy help?
Yes. Many clients I work with attend weekly services and/or have some kind of religious practice, but they lack a feeling of wholeness and fulfilment. Working together in therapy, we can explore what’s missing for you and strategize ways to get more out of your rituals or create new ones.
I am open to any and all belief systems, and I will work to help you achieve your goals for therapy in a way that aligns with your deepest-held beliefs.
I’m in search of counseling for specific mental health issues—I’m not sure that spiritual therapy is what I need.
As a licensed and experienced psychologist, I am trained in a wide variety of evidence-based approaches to help my clients overcome their hurdles and live with purpose and intention. While spiritual and transpersonal perspectives are important to my counseling approach, I offer a holistic, mind-body-spirit healing model. Whatever your concerns, I will customize the therapeutic process to align with your unique goals.
